Things I Really Want on my First Mother’s Day

You know those commercials where people get their mom expensive jewellery?

Let me set the stage for you: they are playing in a meadow wearing their most formal attire and the little kid pulls out a box. The mom opens it, discovers a pair of diamond earrings that the kid could not possibly have the credit score to purchase, and gasps in delight. The commercial ends with her hugging her angelic little ones as the camera swirls around them.

This may be what the commercials show us, but that’s not what new moms like me really want.

What do new moms really want? Here are my suggestions:

Update: What’s new with Newbie Mom Site?

Well, it has been a great couple of weeks for Newbie Mom Site.

First, I hit 3000 views, and I owe it all to you, amazing readers! Did I mention that you all look wonderful today? Are you working out? It shows!

Since starting the blog I have had readers from all over the world, including Spain, Brazil, India, the US, Canada and some smaller places that my geographically-challenged brain did not even know existed. Okay, probably some of those hits were by accident but that’s okay because at least a few were not. Thank you, thank you for reading!

What else is new? Glad you asked! Continue reading

Things My Dog Barks at When the Baby is Awake vs. Asleep

After many a sleepless night, my son has finally become a pretty good sleeper. (I know, feel free to make disparaging comments about me if your baby is not sleeping well at the moment. Are you done? Okay, can I go on now? Great. Where was I?)

Oh, right Baby MB has become a pretty good sleeper, but I still try to keep things quiet for daytime naps. My dog? Not so much. As soon as the baby dozes off, the dog morphs from laidback couch dog to hyper-vigilant guard dog, determined to protect us from any potential dangers. Continue reading

3 Things I didn’t believe were real before I had my baby

Mommy Brain:

Mommy Brain is real. I have experienced it and… wait, what was I saying?

Oh yes, I for sure thought this was just code for being tired. Wrong! If I had to define “mommy brain” now, I would say it is a strange combination of hormones, sleep deprivation and adapting to a complete life change. Continue reading

10 Commandments of Taking a Dog and Baby on a Walk

I. Thou shalt stop at every lawn for the dog to sniff. If the dog happens to skip a lawn, they shall pull you violently backward so as not to miss the delightful smells of this lawn.

II. The dog shall hate when you move steadily, but the baby shall hate when you stop. Thou art screwed either way. Continue reading

Baby MB Learns to Clap

It has been a couple weeks since baby MB discovered the joy of clapping and of all his new skills this one is my favourite. What is cuter than spontaneous baby applause? Not much.

What makes it even cuter is that while he has mastered the physical motion, he has not quite figured out the social context of clapping. So he claps when he is happy, when he is sad or when he is confused. The kid just loves to clap. I like to think he is just a tiny optimist – making the best of whatever comes his way.

Here is a short sampling of all the things baby MB has applauded this week: Continue reading

Strange things I have talked to my baby about

I’m a talker. Have I mentioned this? Probably. Anyway, I have always talked to myself out loud when I’m alone. Without the baby, this is a bit weird so I try to pretend I’m talking on some headset if I’m caught.

Now, since I don’t go anywhere without the baby, I can chat away to my heart’s content to my captive audience without looking weird(er than normal). I chat to him all the time! Not only is MB riveted with my fascinating anecdotes but I’m working on his language skills.

Here are just a few of the strange things I find myself talking to my son about:

The merits of Greek yoghurt vs. regular yoghurt. I have come around to the Greek camp here, because I like the thickness of it. Baby MB was fascinated by this, as no doubt are you, fine reader.  Continue reading

Things I cried about when I was pregnant

The dog food commercial where a chocolate lab jumps into the car at progressively older ages. (I have a chocolate lab. After this commercial, I cried into her fur and asked her to live to be 107 years old.)

Dairy Queen got rid of my favourite blizzard and I didn’t have a back-up. Continue reading

I try to write some clickbait titles about parenting, and you won’t believe what happens next!

A Mom changes her baby’s diaper. You won’t believe what’s inside!

            Okay, you probably will.

A baby goes to bed. Bet you can’t guess what happens next!

Spoiler: it does not end in sleep for anyone.

Weird things my baby finds amusing

  • The word arugula
  • The word couscous
  • Me pretending to eat his tummy
  • My dog squeaking her toys
  • Me doing push-ups at my workout class (To be fair, this one is hilarious. I suck at push-ups.)
