Times I Feel like a Super Mom, but Probably Shouldn’t.

When you are a parent, each day is full of small victories. And I mean small. Some are downright minuscule.

But we all have days like that, right? Days where nothing seems to go right. Our kids are little terrors who make us count down the minutes until bedtime. Everything is a mess, there is no food in the fridge and you can’t seem to get more than a sip of coffee.

On those days, those little victories keep you going. You feel like someone should come around the corner presenting you with a “parent of the year” trophy. Sadly, no one else seems to feel your day merits any trophies. Even though you feel victorious the rest of the world is not that impressed.

Here are a few times I felt like a Super-mom, but no one else agreed:

Reasons I didn’t get anything done today

I didn’t get anything done today. Nope, nothing. Well, more accurately, I got a lot of things done, but none of them are easy to prove to others. I used to feel guilty about things like this, in my pre-baby days. While I feel less guilty now, I still feel compelled to make excuses about why I didn’t manage to do a load of laundry despite being home all day. So, today, instead of giving myself excuses, I decided to write them down here.

Here are the reasons I didn’t get anything done today:

World Records held by Moms

The Olympics continue to make us all into sports fans this week. Last time I wrote about my ideas for Mom Olympic events. (Or Momlympics, if you will.) This week, after watching athletes crush world records in the aquatic events, I started thinking about what kinds of world records would be held by moms. You know, if someone had time to keep track of that kind of thing. (I don’t. Don’t ask me.)

Anyway, here are some world records that would be held by moms:

Stuff First-Time Parents Worry About

First-time parents worry about everything. Okay, well maybe not everything, but definitely more than our more seasoned mom friends. After all, there is a lot of worry about. You are suddenly fully responsible for a helpless human being, who can’t tell you what they need. No pressure.

Though I consider myself to be fairly laid back, I have fallen into the trap of worrying over some pretty small things.

Here are some things first-time parents worry about: Continue reading

10 Commandments for Travelling with your Baby

I. Thou shalt bring all the baby’s toys in hopes of distracting them, but all the baby shall  want to do is play with napkins.

II. Thou shalt attempt to pack a sense of humour and some patience. Thou will not be able to fit those things in thine suitcases because of all the toys.

Breastfeeding a newborn vs. a 10 month old

Before I had a baby, I thought that once you got the hang of breastfeeding, it was all the same from there. Not so, my friends!

Turns out that feeding a newborn is vastly different from breastfeeding an older baby. I decided to compare the highs and lows of breastfeeding a baby at different ages. Let me show you what I mean.

Newborn

Positives: Ugh, are there any? Keeping baby alive is one. Cuddling is sometimes another. Also, you can watch TV while feeding without distracting the baby. Continue reading

Stuff I can do, now that I have a kid

There is a lot written about the things you can’t do as a parent. (Mostly because those adorable children cramp our style. Yep, they are real buzzkills.) However, no one ever talks about the stuff that you can only do because you have kids.

Let me tell you about some unexpected perks of being a parent. No, not unconditional love and all that crap. You probably know about that anyway.

Here are some things I can do now that I have a kid:

You may be looking for daycare in Toronto if…

Daycare in Toronto is not for the faint of heart.

Between the outlandish expense, and the unfathomable politics of the daycare centre wait list, it is enough to drive anyone crazy. So, it is only natural if you find yourself exhibiting some rather bizarre behaviours in your quest for day care.

What type of behaviour, you ask? Since we have finally found daycare for my baby, I now have time to compile this list.

If at least 4 of the following statements apply to you, you may be searching for daycare in Toronto:

A Salute to Hazel!

Today is Hazel’s 4th birthday, so it seems like a perfect time to dedicate a post to my favourite fur baby. Here are 10 things Hazel would like you to know about her:

We brought Hazel home in July of 2012. Her Dad’s name was Parker, which is my last name. She has one brother, and I also have one brother. We felt like she was meant to come home with us.

Mommy, the dog is trying to steal my pillow.

I don’t know why I didn’t realize this, but I didn’t know that dogs have to be trained to walk on a leash. I expected to just clip on the leash and go on a walk, but Hazel was not having that at all. The minute I clipped on her leash, she would glare at me and flop down, refusing to move. Eventually I got a long wooden spoon, covered it in peanut butter and carried it with me on walks. Suddenly the leash was much more appealing and after a week, I could leave the spoon behind.  Continue reading

10 Steps to Shopping as a New Mom

Going shopping used to mean a fun day out with friends. You would leisurely stroll through the shops, spending time trying on new clothes, debating the purchase while twirling in the mirror. Then you would probably stop for coffee. Or a snack. Or both! Why not, you’ve got time.

Yeah, not so much of that any more! A little while back, I posted about my first shopping trip post baby. Now, due to popular demand, I will give you some insight into how I shop for clothes, now that I am a new mom. Okay, fine. No one asked. Too bad, suckers! Here we go. Continue reading
